Utilising the Australian Maritime College's suite of maritime research, training and project resources, AMC Search can provide access to the largest range of facilities available in the southern hemisphere. These are supported by the personnel resources of Australia's national maritime training, education and research institute.

Job Description

The Maritime Instructor - Fire and Safety Specialist at AMC Search plays a pivotal role in delivering high-quality training and education to individuals pursuing careers in the maritime industry. This position requires a blend of technical expertise, instructional skills, and a passion for fostering knowledge among students. This role is essential for shaping the future of maritime professionals by equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge required for success in their careers.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing and developing comprehensive training programmes that align with industry standards and best practices.
  • Delivering engaging and informative lectures, practical demonstrations, and hands-on training sessions on various maritime subjects, including:
    • Fire Prevention and Firefighting (live fire)
    • Personal Survival Techniques
    • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
    • Working in Confined Spaces
    • Working at Heights
    • Damage Control
  • Assessing student performance through examinations, practical assessments, and ongoing feedback to ensure understanding and competency.
  • Staying current with developments in maritime regulations, technologies, and teaching methodologies to provide up-to-date information.
  • Collaborating with industry professionals to enhance course content and ensure relevance to current maritime trends.
  • Maintaining accurate records of student attendance, performance, and feedback for continuous improvement of training delivery.
  • Providing mentorship and support to students throughout their learning journey to foster confidence and skill development.
  • Participating in professional development opportunities to enhance personal teaching skills and knowledge within the maritime sector.

Desired Skills and Experience

About You

  • A demonstrated ability to develop and deliver training programmes using a range of innovative and flexible delivery and assessment methods.
  • Demonstrated high level written and oral communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in training and assessment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Chief Integrated Rating and/or
  • Appropriately qualified RAN personnel
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (or ability to achieve).
  • Current Tasmanian Working with Vulnerable People registration (or the ability to obtain before commencement).
  • Current Australian C class driver licence or manual vehicle licence.

Required Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in a maritime role, preferably at sea or in maritime operations. 

Desired Experience

  • Previous experience as a trainer or instructor in a maritime setting.
  • Experience with curriculum development and educational best practices.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting risk assessments and safety drills

 

Based in Launceston, this position also involves training at our Bell Bay and Beauty Point campuses and may include field trips, industry engagement, and occasional interstate or international travel.

The role is offered as a twelve-month fixed-term contract.
