
AMC Search is the Training and Consultancy arm of the Australian Maritime College. Based in Launceston Tasmania, AMC Search serves the Australian and international maritime and defence industries. Utilising the Australian Maritime College's suite of maritime research, training and project resources, AMC Search can provide access to the largest range of facilities available in the southern hemisphere. These are supported by the personnel resources of Australia's national maritime training, education and research institute.
About the Role
We are looking for a ‘hands-on’ Autonomous Maritime Systems Engineer to support the development and delivery of AMC Search’s Autonomous Maritime Systems (AMS) capabilities, with a primary focus on engineering project design and delivery. This 12-month fixed-term role involves applying practical engineering skills and experience to the design, development, integration, and testing of autonomous maritime systems. The position also supports the execution of engineering consultancy projects, delivering high-quality, fit-for-purpose solutions to clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of autonomous maritime systems, with a primary focus on mechanical and electrical systems and end-to-end integration
- Develop system architectures and define interfaces across hardware and software components
- Integrate sensors, actuators, and communication systems into autonomous platforms (AUVs, USVs)
- Support in-house manufacture, assembly, and commissioning of prototype systems and components
- Develop and document hardware and system-level test procedures
- Execute verification and validation activities, including field testing and trials
- Analyse test data and produce clear, structured technical reports and validation documentation
- Support troubleshooting, fault finding, and continuous improvement of system performance
- Contribute to engineering consultancy projects, including concept development, analysis, and client engagement
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across engineering and operations
- Support training within the Defence and Autonomous Systems function
About you
- Demonstrated self-starter with a positive, outcome focused mindset towards delivery of projects
- Practical engineering experience and strong understanding of maritime systems (both mechanical and electrical)
- Strong engineering and technical problem-solving abilities
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including a collaborative mindset – you naturally consult with engineers around you
- Australian Citizen (as a requirement to obtain Australian Government security clearance)

Desired Experience
- Experience with autonomous maritime systems (AUVs, USVs) and related technologies
- Experience in system integration across mechanical, electrical, and software domains
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in similar roles
- Experience with software development - ROS2, Python, or C++
- Networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, Ethernet, serial communications
- Experience with CAN bus systems, including NMEA 2000 marine networks
- Experience conducting structural analysis using Finite Element Modelling
- Experience planning and executing field trials
- Eligibility for or already hold an Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) Clearance
